PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for expressing the slight difference of featured values which used to be difficult to express with a gray image in a conventional image conversion method. SOLUTION: The luminance value of each pixel is determined based on the total sum Dt<SB>Colorgray</SB>of each deviation of pixels, and the value is calculated in accordance with a formula (1): Dt<SB>Colorgray</SB>=255-(k<SB>R</SB>D<SB>R</SB>+k<SB>G</SB>D<SB>G</SB>+k<SB>B</SB>D<SB>B</SB>+k<SB>RG</SB>D<SB>RG</SB>+k<SB>GB</SB>D<SB>GB</SB>+k<SB>BR</SB>D<SB>BR</SB>). In this case, D<SB>RG</SB>is a deviation related with a difference value between the R value and the G value, and D<SB>GB</SB>is a deviation related with a difference value between the G value and the B value, and D<SB>BR</SB>is a deviation related with a difference value between the B value and the R value. The values of weighting coefficients k<SB>R</SB>, k<SB>G</SB>, k<SB>B</SB>, k<SB>RG</SB>, k<SB>GB</SB>and k<SB>BR</SB>are set by a user so that it is possible to generate a gray image in which the luminance value of desired featured values is emphasized.
