PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image retrieval system which precisely retrieves an original electronic document, when the original electronic document is retrieved from printed matter, even if the printed matter is a document comprising a plurality of pages or having addition, removal, alteration or replacement of pages, and also provide a method, a recording medium and a program therefor. SOLUTION: Image data groups including a plurality of document images each comprising a plurality of pages are stored in a client PC 102 or the like in association with their feature quantities. An MFP 100 electronically reads printed matter having a plurality of pages in units of pages, converts them to electronic data, and extracts the feature quantities. Then, the feature quantities of the electronic data are compared, for each page, with the feature quantity of each document image included in the image data groups to compute similarity, and a document image corresponding to the electronic data is retrieved, as the candidate image data, from the image data groups based on the similarity.
