PROCESS FOR PRODUCING AROMATIC HYDROCARBON AND HYDROGEN

A process for producing an aromatic hydrocarbon and hydrogen, comprising supplying a starting gas containing a lower hydrocarbon and bringing the gas into contact with a catalyst at an elevated temperature to reform the starting gas, thereby producing an aromatic hydrocarbon and hydrogen. In this process, in supplying the starting gas, hydrogen gas is simultaneously supplied, and, while supplying the hydrogen gas, the supply of the starting gas is stopped for a given period of time. A molybdenum-supported metallosilicate or a molybdenum and rhodium-supported metallosilicate may be used as the catalyst. The hydrogen gas supplied together with the starting gas is set to more than 2% and less than 10%, preferably 4% to 8%, particularly preferably 8%, based on the starting gas. In the production of an aromatic hydrocarbon and hydrogen by the reforming reaction, pretreatment for the reforming reaction is carried out in such a manner that, in such a state that a methane gas or a gas containing methane and hydrogen is supplied, the temperature of the catalyst is raised and is then kept for a given period of time.
