PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable data communications between a positioning device and a motor drive without increasing the number of signals for connecting a positioning controller to the motor drive. SOLUTION: The motor drive includes means for detecting that normal and reversal rotation pulse signals turns to be active, making a communication mode detecting signal active, and holding the communication mode detecting signal in an active state till the normal and reversal rotation pulse signals turn to be non-active. When the data communication is carried out between both the devices, the positioning controller makes the communication mode detecting signal of the motor drive active so that the normal and reversal pulse signals turn to be active. Thus, a serial data signal is transmitted from the positioning controller to the motor drive through either driving signal line, and transmitted from the motor drive to the positioning controller through a state signal line.
