Gas generator for an air bag includes a plastic base (24) which is directly attached to the entire length of the side wall (30) of a pre-prepared detonator (16). The plastic base (24) extends beyond the front face (28) of the detonator to form at least a section of a wall (32) forming a combustion or booster chamber with the intiator.
