An oxychlorination catalyst supported on active carbon comprises at least one gold or platinum component selected from group "A" below and at least one copper component selected from group "B" below, and, optionally, at least one member of group "C" below. Group "A" sonsists of metallic gold, gold oxides, hydroxides, fluorides, chlorides, bromides, iodides, cyanides, sulphides, sulphates and nitrates, chloroauric acid, platinium metal, platinum oxides, hydroxides, fluorides, chlorides, bromides, iodides, sulphates and sulphides, platinic nitrate, platinum ammonium chlorides and hydrochloroplatinous acid. Group "B" consists of metallic copper, copper oxides, hydroxides, chlorides, acetates and sulphides, cuprous formate and iodide, and cupric bromide, carbonate, chlorate, phosphate, sulphate and oxalate. Group "C" consists of the metals themselves and the chlorides, oxides, hydroxides, nitrates, sulphides, sulphates, carbonates, phosphates and acetates of Ag, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb, Cr, Fe, Ru, Pd, Os, Ir and Rh. In example 1 the active carbon support has a surface area of 1100 m<SP>2</SP>/gr. In example 12 the support used is 50 to 100 mesh active carbon.
