<p>An optical time domain reflectometry apparatus for sensing a parameter to be measured in a region of interest comprises an optical fibre, source means 1 operable to launch optical radiation into the optical fibre at a probe wavelength; and detection means 2 operable to produce electrical output signals in response to optical radiation backscattered from the optical fibre and is characterised in that the optical fibre comprises a first section, into which the optical radiation at the probe wavelength is launched, and a second section 6 deployed in the region of interest, the first section being optically connected to the second section at a location 3 remote from the source means and comprising first and second fibres, the first fibre 5a being arranged so as to convey optical radiation at the probe wavelength towards the second section and the second fibre 5b being arranged so as to convey the backscattered optical radiation returned from the second section to the detecting means.</p> |
