A layered lithium nickel composite oxide powder for high-density lithium secondary battery positive electrode material that can provide a lithium secondary battery of large capacity excelling in rate characteristics. In particular, a layered lithium nickel composite oxide powder for lithium secondary battery positive electrode material, which has a bulk density of 2.0 g/cc or higher, an average primary particle diameter (B) of 0.1 to 1 mum, a secondary particle median diameter (A) of 9 to 20 mum and a ratio (A/B) of secondary particle median diameter (A) to average primary particle diameter (B) of 10 to 200. There is further provided a process for producing the layered lithium nickel composite oxide powder, comprising dispersing a nickel compound and a compound of non-nickel transition metal element capable of substitution for lithium in a liquid medium, effecting spray drying of the thus obtained slurry, mixing the same with a lithium compound and firing the mixture to thereby obtain a layered lithium nickel composite oxide powder, wherein the spray drying is carried out under the conditions of 0.4 <= G/S <= 4 and G/S <= 0.0012V in which V represents the viscosity of slurry at spray drying (cp), S represents the amount of slurry supplied (g/min) and G represents the amount of gas supplied (L/min). |
