An alpha-haloalcohol is made by hydrogenating an alpha-haloketone with a hydrogenating agent in the presence of a transition metal-containing heterogeneous catalyst, under conditions such that an alpha-haloalcohol is formed. The reaction is particularly useful, for example, in a process to make epoxides which may be generally prepared by: (a) reducing an alpha-haloketone with a hydrogenating agent to form an alpha-haloalcohol; and (b) cyclizing the alpha-haloalcohol with base to make an epoxide.
