The invention relates to a system for controlling a vehicle lighting unit comprising a system for turning an area illuminated by said lighting unit in relation to a reference direction, a system for determining a wheel orientation angle and a travelling speed sensor. The theoretical value of a turning angle is determined as a function of the wheel orientation angle and travelling speed. Said invention is characterised in that the inventive system comprises a smoothing unit (filter) for smoothing in time the signal of the wheel orientation angle according to the travelling speed, the theoretic value of the turning angle being determined according to the smoothed wheel orientation angle.
