<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure long-term stability, to improve reliability, and to speed up a response, when monitoring and controlling WDM signal light. <P>SOLUTION: An optical system comprises an optical processing means for performing at least one processing among the relaying, branching, and switching of signal light that is transmitted in a main optical path and subjected to wavelength division multiplexing; and a monitoring means for detecting the spectrum of the signal light that depends on processing. The monitoring means includes a means for taking out signal light for monitoring that is partial signal light from the main optical path; a means for dispersing the signal light for monitoring in a band containing the wavelength of the signal light; a light-receiving element array for receiving the dispersed light; and a means for calculating the spectrum of the signal light by performing the operation of the output signal of the light-receiving element array. The optical processing means includes an optical amplifier. The signal light for monitoring comprises first and second signal light for monitoring corresponding to upstream and downstream sides of the optical amplifier in the main optical path, respectively. The optical processing means further includes an optical switch for performing supply to a means for selectively dispersing the first and second signal light for monitoring. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
