A method for organic thin film formation, comprising the step of bringing a solution for organic thin film formation prepared by mixing a metal surfactant (1) containing at least one hydrolyzable group, an assistant for organic thin film formation prepared from a compound, which can interact with the metal surfactant (1) in an organic solvent, and a metal surfactant (2) containing at least one hydrolyzable group together into contact with a substrate to form an organic thin film onto the surface of the substrate, characterized in that the water content is regulated or maintained so as to fall within a predetermined content range. There is also provided a method for organic thin film formation, comprising the step of bringing an organic solvent solution prepared by mixing a metal surfactant containing at least one hydrolyzable group with a catalyst, which can interact with the surfactant, into contact with a substrate to form an organic thin film onto the surface of the substrate, characterized in that the organic solvent solution has a predetermined water content and contains 20 to 2000 ppm of a hydroxyl-containing compound as a hydrolyzate of the metal surfactant. An assistant for organic thin film formation and a solution for organic thin film formation for use in this method are also provided.
