PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct cooling rotating electric machine which can prevent damage to an insulating connection tube to circulate a cooling medium from the end of a stator winding to an interior, and can early discover damage to the insulating connection tube; and to provide a method of cooling the rotating electric machine. SOLUTION: In the rotating electric machine, the cooling medium is circulated into a hollow connection conductor 5 connected to the hollow stator winding 3 and the end 3a of the stator winding to cool directly the stator winding 3a and the connection conductor 5. A manifold 7 which supplies and discharges the cooling medium is connected to the connection conductor 5 through the insulating connection tube 6.
