The assembly to grind a continuous metal belt (10) to clean its surface, at a papermaking or cardboard production machine, has a grinding stone (13) pressed against it as it moves around its deflection rollers (11,12). The grinding stone is moved laterally against the belt surface while supported by a deflection roller. The grinding stone is of aluminum oxide, silicon carbide or diamonds. The metal belt is heated to an austenitic temperature before the surface is ground.
