An air-conditioning apparatus having an outdoor unit and an indoor unit connected through an inter-unit piping is enabled to perform a pump-down operation while protecting a compressor reliably. The air-conditioning apparatus (1) comprises an outdoor unit (2) including a compressor (21) to be driven by a compressor motor (28) controlled by a gas-side closing valve (26) and an inverter (31), an outdoor heat exchanger (23), an electric expansion valve (24) and a liquid-side closing value (27), an indoor unit (4) having an indoor heat exchanger (41), and inter-unit pipings (5, 6) for connecting the outdoor unit (2) and the indoor unit (4). The air-conditioning apparatus (1) decides it on the basis of the compressor power fed from the inverter (31) to the compressor motor (28) whether or not a pump-down operation is performed in the state of a refrigerating cycle operation to cause the indoor heat exchanger (41) to function as a coolant evaporator, and stops the compressor (21), in case the pump-down operation is performed, after lapser of a predetermined stop time.
