PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical refuse incinerator capable of perfectly performing thermal decomposition of dioxin in addition to stable incineration of industrial waste and medical waste largely fluctuated in refuse quality, and easily performing control of furnace internal temperature/pressure, and an operation control method thereof. SOLUTION: The vertical refuse incinerator V comprises a main body constituted by a primary combustion device 2 for combustible matters, a vertical embers combustion mechanism 3 connected to the downstream side of the primary combustion device 2, a combustion chamber 4 covering the primary combustion device 2 and the embers combustion mechanism 3, and a re-combustion chamber 5 placed at the top of the combustion chamber 4. Refuse R is intermittently put onto the primary combustion device 2 to burn the combustible matters of high heating quantity, and the remaining incombustible and non-combustible matters are fed to the surface combustion mechanism 3 arranged on the downstream side to perform the surface combustion of the incombustible matters.
