PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for use as an electroluminescence element with low driving voltage and high light emission efficiency, and the electroluminescent element using the same. SOLUTION: An organic electroluminescent element has a plurality of organic compound thin films, containing a light-emitting layer and a hole blocking layer between both electrodes of an anode layer and a cathode layer. A hole-blocking material, forming the hole blocking layer, has an ionization potential higher by 0.1 eV or more than that of a light-emitting layer forming material that forms the light-emitting layer.
