PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a long life short arc discharge lamp. SOLUTION: The impure gas removing device 1 is provided with a bell jar cover 3, a bell jar bottom plate 5, an o-ring 7, a first insulation sleeve 9. A second insulation sleeve 11, and a controller 17. A lamp electrode 23 is held on the first insulation sleeve 9, and a space 25 is vacuumed through a vacuum port 13 by using a vacuum pump or the like. Argon gas is filled with 0.6 atmospheric pressure from gas filling port 15. An electric power is supplied from the controller 17 by 200A to heat the lamp electrode. The lamp electrode is heated to a temperature equal to a temperature in lighting so that the impure gas present in the lamp electrode is discharged.
