PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify an optical disk using only normal lands or grooves from that using lands/grooves easily, rapidly, and reliably. SOLUTION: A reproduced sum signal storage/operation section 17 calculates the difference between maximum amplitude values A, B obtained by the groove section/land section of an optical disk, and a CPU 4 compares the difference with a predetermined constant VD. When it is determined that the difference is equal to or smaller than the constant VD, the medium is determined to be a 2.3 GB one.
