<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technique for allowing a plurality of modes including a single mode, a dual mode, a tandem mode and a bypass mode in an exhaust emission control system combining two exhaust emission control devices. <P>SOLUTION: The system comprises an exhaust pipe 5 connected at one end to an internal combustion engine 1 and branched at a branch point into a first branch passage 10a and a second branch passage 10b, a first connection passage 10c and a second connection passage 10d formed to bridge the first branch passage 10a and the second branch passage 10d, a first filter 11a disposed in the first connection passage 10c and a second filter 11b disposed in the second connection passage 10d.
