PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium whose reliability is enhanced and by which recording and reproduction of high density information can be performed and which has a small diameter, and to provide a production method for the same and a magnetic recording and reproducing device. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium includes at least a backing layer, a perpendicular magnetic recording film and a protective film that are stacked on a nonmagnetic substrate. The nonmagnetic substrate is a disk-shaped silicon having a diameter of 48 mm or less, the protective film is constituted of DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) and the perpendicular magnetic recording film has a granular structure containing at least Co, Pt and an oxide. The oxide includes one selected from the group composed of SiO<SB>2</SB>, Cr<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, TiO, TiO<SB>2</SB>and Ta<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB>. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
