摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate light scattering generated at an interface between a polarizing plate and a liquid crystal element to suppress reduction of light transmittance by incorporating an alignment function for controlling alignment of a ferroelectric liquid crystal and a polarization function for changing non-polarized light into linearly polarized light into one of alignment layers and to attain thinness, lightness and reduction of manufacturing costs of the liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element having the ferroelectric liquid crystal interposed between two alignment substrates each having a substrate, an electrode layer and the alignment layer, the one alignment layer of the two alignment layers for controlling alignment of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is so formed as to be a columnar alignment layer having a column structure wherein plate-like molecules having light dichroism in a visible light region are stacked so that normal directions of the plate-like molecules face in a fixed direction and having the alignment function and the polarization function.
