PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating optical system which, while suppressing heat generation, prevents any unnecessary light component from entering an image formation element. SOLUTION: The illuminating optical system includes: a first lens array 3 for dividing light from a light source into a plurality of luminous fluxes; a second lens array 4 having second lens sections L1 and L2 corresponding to a plurality of first lens sections composing the first lens array; the polarization conversion element 5 for aligning the polarization directions of rays of light from the second lens array; and a first optical system 6 for irradiating an image formation element 8 with light from the polarization conversion element. The second lens array has an optical face P between the adjacent second lens sections, the optical face P being designed such that light made incident on the first optical system from the polarization conversion element is directed in a direction different from the direction of the image formation element.
