PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set optimum fixing temperature according to a paper type to be used. SOLUTION: A fixing device comprises a paper type detection heater control means (C11A) for controlling a heater at ON/OF intervals set at the start of a job, in order to detect a paper type; a paper type discriminating means for discriminating the paper type, based on a fixing temperature (Th) detected by a fixing temperature sensor (SN1), when the number (N) of prints produced consecutively reaches the number (N1) of sheets assigned to discriminate the paper type; a target fixing temperature setting means (C10) for setting the target-fixing temperature (Ta) of fixing members (Fh and Fp) according to the discriminated paper type; and a paper-type post-detection heater control means (C11B) for controlling the heater so that the fixing members (Fh and Fp) are kept at a set target-fixing temperature (Ta).
