PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical wavelength conversion device which is downsized, simplified and has reduced power consumption by suppressing restrictions on wavelength conversion speed due to gain recovering time. SOLUTION: The optical wavelength conversion device 11 is mainly composed of: a multi-mode interference waveguide (MMI)1 which simultaneously waveguides at least a zero-order fundamental mode and a first-order mode and has a gain region set so as to make a gain of the zero-order fundamental mode higher than that of the first-order mode, an incident waveguide 2 coupled with the zero-order fundamental mode of MMI; an incident waveguide 3 coupled with the first-order mode of MMI; an outgoing waveguide 5 coupled with the zero-order fundamental mode of MMI; and an outgoing waveguide 6 coupled with the first-order mode of MMI. When signal light Is with a wavelengthλs is made incident on the incident waveguide 2 and probe light Ip with a wavelengthλp is made incident on the incident waveguide 3, wavelength converted light Op with a wavelengthλp subjected to intensity modulation with the signal light Is is emitted from the outgoing waveguide 6.
