PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a person having difficulty in hearing to converse with a speech partner directly or over the phone by developing an exclusive, portable and simultaneous speech/character converter which is designed for use with a person having difficulty in hearing for whom hearing-aids are unworkable but the person capable of speaking and recognizing letters and which is easily and successfully usable by any one. SOLUTION: With a device (talking boy), the side of the person having difficulty in hearing performs character conversion and display of the speech talked by the other party and converses with the speech partner directly or over the phone while viewing the converted character. The outline of the device is a portable and compact device having a function to perform the character conversion and display of the speech talked by the other party. A microphone for sound collection is built in the device. Further, the device is provided with a connection terminal for connection to a telephone (including a cellular phone) for inputting of speech. The device is so constituted that the character enlargement of the character display is made possible.
