PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a print start position corresponding to the patch head position of a ribbon regardless of the fixing position of a sensor, and to ensure a constant winding force regardless of the winding diameter. SOLUTION: When a ribbon 1 from a ribbon core 2 on the feeding side is wound around a ribbon core 3 on the winding side, a color sensor 4 detects the patch head position of a magenta ribbon (M) in the ribbon core 3. Relation between the feeding amount of the ribbon 1 from the ribbon core 2 and the rotation of an encoder 8 is known previously. Since the patch head of the magenta ribbon (M) can be carried surely to a print start position when variation in the slit 11 of the encoder 8 is measured after the patch head position of a magenta ribbon (M) is detected by the sensor 4, print start position of each color can be determined accurately.
