PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet type printer which prevents a carriage from being left at a position at the time of paper jamming. SOLUTION: The inkjet type printer with the carriage 14 which carries a recording head and moves back and forth in a width direction of a recording medium includes a carriage driving CM for moving the carriage 14, a driving state detecting means ENC for detecting a driving state of the carriage driving means CM, a cap member 22 set at one end side of a movement range 20 of the carriage to cap the recording head, and a control means 18 which monitors the position of the carriage according to an output ENC from the driving state detecting means and carries out error output after retreating the carriage 14 to an end position of the movement range 20 by reverse driving the carriage driving means CM when the carriage 14 becomes unable to move in the movement range 20 on the basis of the output.
