PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field emission display device with which a stable memory operation is realized and an electrostatic charge in an insulator is erased by an erasing pulse with a small amplitude. SOLUTION: A period which is allocated to a writing operation for one row is divided into three periods, namely, a writing period, a non-writing period and an erasing period. A scanning pulse of a voltage Vg is applied with corresponding writing period timing to a first electron drawing electrode 5 and thereafter, by applying a sustain pulse of a voltage Vs of any length including the same number of the writing period and the non-writing period, an electron is discharged from an electron discharge material 3 and the erasing pulse of a voltage Ve such that energy of the discharged electron is small and an injected electron amount is smaller than an emitted electron amount of the insulator 6. A data pulse is applied to the cathode 2, in the writing period in a pixel in which emission is desired to be produced and the data pulse is applied in the non-writing period in the pixel in which emission is not desired to be produced.
