The invention relates to a motion estimation method for the encoding of an image sequence with spatial and temporal scalability.The inventive method is characterised in that it employs an optimisation step (44, 46) for the estimation of scalable motion fields, comprising a step (93) consisting in comparing the source image having a given temporal level and spatial resolution to a reconstructed image obtained by means of motion-compensated temporal synthesis (91, 92) of low-frequency sub-bands relating to the upper temporal level and corresponding to the given spatial resolution (W <SUB>k,i</SUB>). The invention can be used for the transmission and storage of data.
