<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain omission of a wire harnesses, such as a power cable, and improvement in power loss, in a vehicle driving system of an engine/motor hybrid type. <P>SOLUTION: Portions 1 of wheels are driven by an engine 3. Wheels 2, other than the wheels driven by the engine 3, are driven by a rotary electric machine 4. When a running load is large, such as at starting and going up a slope, the rotary electric machine 4 is driven as a motor for driving the wheels to assist an engine drive system. In driving a vehicle, there exists a driving region requiring no motor-driven assist, such as low/medium load running and at speed reduction. When such an assist is not required, the rotary electric machine is caused to function as a power generator, and mechanical energy from the wheels is converted into electrical energy.
