A line generating device (5, fig.1) generates two fan-shaped beams of light at an angle to each other, and projects the beams onto an adjacent surface, e.g. 51 where the beams are visible as lines on the surface. A user has access to the intersection of the lines, so that the intersection can be marked or otherwise used in combination with the lines, such as in aligning objects. Two laser diodes (48, 50) may be used for generating the light beams and the beams may be reshaped by lens 42 for producing two separate fan beams 62a, 62b and fan beam 64 which beams intersect. A number of independent claims are present directed to various aspects of a line generating device. Claim 32 relates to the lens construction having first and second lens elements which include reflective and refractive surfaces for light beam shaping.
