354,529. Tunnels &c. WADE, H., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Commercial Shearing & Stamping Co. ; Youngstown, Ohio, U.S.A.) July 23, 1930, No. 22267. [Class 85.] Liner plates for tunnels &c. are formed from a plate bent to form rear walls 8 and side walls 9 with offset parts 10 whereby reinforcing members 11, secured to the wall 8 by welds 12, may fully engage the side walls 9 to transmit pressure as from the jacks of a tunnelling shield. The ends of the walls 8, 9 are connected by welded plates 14. Angle-irons 16 are secured to the walls 9 and members 11 by welds 17, 18, 19. Further temporary members 11 may be held by wedges engaging the outer flanges of the angles 16. Adjacent plates are connected by bolts 22, or rivets, lead, &c., packing surrounding the bolts ; connecting plates 24 may also be provided. Each ring of lining is completed by a short wedge-shaped key member 25, Fig. 6. Holes 23 allow grout to be forced outside the lining. Tapered plates may be provided whereby a wedge-shaped ring may be built; such rings may be placed at intervals as desired when the tunnel curves. Gaskets 30, Fig. 6, may be placed between adjacent plates, or the plates may be welded together, or the angle-irons may extend outwardly, Fig. 9, and be curved to form pockets in which intermittent or continuous welds 37 connect the plates and lead-wool, oakum, &c. 38 completes the joint. In Fig. 12, walls of adjacent plates are of unequal length and a caulking tool 56 is applied to drive an edge of one wall against the other wall.
