A surgical instrument is described for manipulating a bent wire eg. for inserting a Kirschner wire into apertures provided in a bone plate. The instrument comprises two jaws 12, 14, pivoting about a common bearing 16 and operated by handles 18, 20. A spring 22 biasses the jaws away from each other. One or both jaws includes a slot 34,36 for receiving and holding bent wire 42 in a plane parallel to the direction of the gripping force exerted by the instrument. Opposing jaws may also be provided with a die (44) and ram (46) for bending the wire. The jaws may also be equipped with cutting edges (50, 52) for severing the wire together with frustroconical aperture (72, 74) for holding it during cutting. |
