The invention relates to a nuclear fuel with a high density of fissile material in the form of an assembly (1) of elementary threads, whereby the major part thereof consists of fissile material, whereby said threads are assembled by stranding, plaiting or weaving, whereby said assembly is contained in a non-oxidizing, ductile wrapper (2). The elementary threads are compressed by deformation of the wrapper (2) and the elementary threads made of fissile material are sufficiently fine in order to enable dimensional accommodation of the fuel with an irradiation effect during nuclear combustion and removal of gaseous fission products. The invention also relates to a method for producing said nuclear fuel.
