The user is associated with a local network (10, 12, 14, 28) which has access to different communication networks (24, 26, 30, 32) and the connection comprises carrying out the following steps in the local network: - (A) obtaining receiving party and user identification information via at least one data message sent by the user; - (B) analysing this information; - (C) using the analysis results to determine a preferred call connection method for connecting a call from the user to the receiving party; - (D) connecting a first telephone call between the local network and a user terminal according to the preferred call connection method; - (E) connecting a second telephone call between the local area network and a receiving party terminal according to the preferred call connection method; and - (F) connecting the first and second telephone calls. - Step (c) is used to determine via which network the call is to be made.
