A method and system for increasing compatibility among telecommunications networks using different types of signaling systems. Current location information for a mobile station is stor ed (54) in a register (24). Subsequently, a telecommunication node attempting to access the mobile station (10) requests (58, 82) current location data from the register. It is determined, however, that the stored location information is incompatible with a signali ng system used by the telecommunication node. As a result, a physical address that corresponds to the stored location informati on is identified (60, 64, 84) as bring compatible with the signaling, system. The identified physical address is then used to perform t he access of the mobile station. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the attempted access of the mobile station is f or purposes of delivering (66) a short message service (SMS) message. In another embodiment, the attempted access comprises un attempt to set up an international call connection (88).
