The method involves allowing drum doors to remain open if no change of state of a magnetic field sensor (2) is effected during a time period because of absence of rotation of a drum driving pulley (30). Starting or continuation of washing or drying cycle is stopped and an alarm message is displayed on a control display. A cloth washing or drying machine is controlled if no change of state of the sensor is noticed.
