PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording apparatus wherein careless erasure of recording information of a medium can be suppressed even when a track width of a main magnetic pole is made narrow and recording overwriting characteristics can be improved. SOLUTION: In the perpendicular magnetic recording apparatus having a vertical two layer medium including a substrate, a soft magnetic backing layer which includes a soft magnetic layer, an intermediate layer and a soft magnetic layer and wherein the two soft magnetic layers are antiferromagnetically bonded and a vertical magnetic layer and a magnetic head including the main magnetic pole, a return yoke and an exciting coil, the relation of antiferromagnetic bonding force Hex_afc of the two soft magnetic layers included in the soft magnetic backing layer and a half value width MWW in a cross-track direction when a low frequency signal is recorded in the vertical recording layer by the magnetic head satisfies a formula of Hex_afc>1.6×ln((0.23-MWW)<SP>2</SP>×100)+25.6.
