PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary compressor for keeping discharge pressure during operation constant while preventing overload of an electric motor as a drive part in starting and after the start, without enlarging the electric motor. SOLUTION: The rotary compressor has a pressure detector 15, a torque detector 16, and a control device 19. The pressure detector 15 detects the pressure of the gas discharged from a compressor body 12. The torque detector detects the torque acting on a drive shaft of the electric motor 11 whose rotation number is controlled by an inverter 17. Based on a threshold valve of torque of the electric motor 11 smaller than the maximum drive torque which is input in advance, a desired pressure set value , a pressure signal sent from the pressure detector 15 to indicate the detected pressure, and a torque signal sent from the torque detector to indicate the detected torque, the control device 19 controls the rotation number so that difference between the detected pressure and the set pressure is eliminated when the detected torque is smaller than the threshold value. Except in the above case, the control device 19 controls the rotation number so that acceleration is reduced until the detected torque gets smaller than the threshold value.
