<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop rotation quickly by avoiding oscillatory variation of motor position in the vicinity of stop position without performing positional detection. <P>SOLUTION: A brake control section 101 outputs a current command value vector (i<SB>α</SB><SP>*</SP>, i<SB>β</SB><SP>*</SP>) for brake control. The current command value i<SB>β</SB><SP>*</SP>is substantially set at zero. The current command value i<SB>α</SB><SP>*</SP>takes zero/positive value, respectively, depending on the powering/regenerative operation of a motor 106. In order to judge the powering/regenerative operation of the motor 106, a power operating section 103a determines effective power P<SB>re</SB>of the motor 106.
