PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing device which speedily displays an image even at the time of slow reproduction. SOLUTION: The reproducing device is provided with a reproduction means for conveying a tape-like recording medium and reproducing image data including MPEG coded image data from the tape-like recording medium, a memory which stores the image data reproduced by the reproduction means, a decoding means for reading and decoding the image data stored in the memory and a control means for controlling the reproduction means to reproduce the image data as conveying the tape-like recording medium at conveyance speed at the time of standard reproduction until a predetermined amount of the image data is stored in the memory according to an instruction of starting a slow reproduction mode for reproducing the image data at speed slower than that at the time of standard reproduction and to convey the tape-like recording medium at speed corresponding to the slow reproduction mode to reproduce the image data after that.
