The invention relates to a method for producing a 2,2'-dihydroxy- biphenyl by the oxidative coupling of two phenol molecules, which have a hydrogen atom in an o-position, using a peroxide in the presence of water at a temperature ranging from 0 °C to 100 °C. The invention is characterized in that the production is carried out in the presence of a water-insoluble polymer, containing; a) 0.1 to 99.9 % by weight of at least one vinyl heterocyclic compound; b) 0.1 to 10 % by weight of a bifunctional cross-linker constituent; c) 0 to 99.8 % by weight of styrene or of at least one monounsaturated styrene derivative or mixtures thereof, whereby the indicated percentages by weight of the individual constituents a), b) and c) total 100 %.
