PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device having excellent display quality. SOLUTION: The image display device displays images corresponding to input image data. The image display device includes: a plurality of space modulating sections 210, 220, and 230 for displaying images in a plurality of colors; an optical path composing section 310 for optically composing a plurality of rays of light obtained by modulating illuminating light from a light source 110 with the space modulating sections; and a light ray shift section 400 by which shift control of rays of projection light synthesized by the optical path synthesizing section is executed based on the direction of the polarization of the projection light in synchronization of the modulation timing of each space modulating section.
