PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display apparatus which can be operated stably at a low temperature, and to provide a method for driving the display. SOLUTION: The display comprises a panel 100 composed of a first substrate on which a black layer 134, a conductive layer 136, an insulating layer 138 and a common electrode 140 are successively formed, and a second substrate, having thin-film transistors arranged in a matrix and coupled with the first substrate with a sealant 144; a temperature sensor 800 which senses a temperature of the panel 100 or the ambient temperature of the panel 100; and a power supply unit 700 which controls the temperature of the panel 100 corresponding to the sensing result of the temperature sensor 800. Thereby, when the temperature of the panel or the ambient temperature of the panel is sensed as a low temperature, the conductive layer 136, formed between the black layer 134 and the insulating layer 138, is heated to maintain the driving temperature of the panel to the normal temperature or higher, and thereby, this prevents decrease in the color reproduction rate.
