<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle driver reduced in size and having a low fuel consumption, and also to provide a controller alleviating a shock when controlling the driver. <P>SOLUTION: The state of speed switching mechanism 10 is changed to continuously variable transmission state or stepped speed changing state by an engaging device (a selecting clutch CO or a selecting brake BO). The driver having both advantages of fuel consumption improvement effect of a speed changing device which electrically changes speed changing ratio and high transmission efficiency of a gear transmission which mechanically transmits power is obtained. When changing the state of the speed changing mechanism 10 into the continuously variable transmission state or the stepped speed changing state, release or engagement of the engaging device is selected in a state that change of an engine torque T<SB>E</SB>is suppressed by suppression control means 82 of drive power source torque change. The presence or absence of reaction torque by a first electric motor M1 is selected and torque is delivered between the engaging device and the first electric motor M1.
