PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition for a high-frequency transmission line having small dielectric anisotropy (Δε) and a high indexΔn of birefringence in a visible light range and small tanδin a GHz band. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition for a variable functional device contains compounds represented by formulae I, II and III wherein R<SB>1</SB>represents alkenyl group; R<SB>2</SB>represents alkyl or alkenyl group; C<SP>1</SP>and C<SP>2</SP>each represents 1,4-phenylene group or the like; X<SB>4</SB>is -CN; X<SB>3</SB>-X<SB>9</SB>each represents H, F or the like; and K<SP>1</SP>and K<SP>2</SP>each represents a linking group.
