PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a functional building material which can exhibit more excellent decorative properties while keeping a humidity-controlling function and a volatile organic compound-adsorbing function. SOLUTION: This functional building material comprises a hydrothermally solidified material 1 that is obtained by molding a formulated matter for hydrothermal solidification by a dry press method, and thereafter hydrothermally treating the molded product to produce at least calcium silicate hydrate and solidify it, and an inorganic decorating layer 2 that is formed on the surface of the thermally solidified material 1 and has fine cracks.
