PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which does not irradiate light outside the region of an object to be read even in the lengthwise direction of a light source. SOLUTION: A light source 33 uses those adjustable for irradiation region such as white light LED array. An original size is detected by inputting from a user or with various sensors before the size of formed original is read by an original size detecting means 64, and a lighting control means 66 sets illumination width and exposure length of a light source. During reading operation for a non-standard original, the image is analyzed by an original region discriminating means 68 to discriminate regions in which an original is present for each line, and the lighting control means 66, based on the discrimination result, sequentially controls lighting state of the light source 33 when the next line is read.
