PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quantitative evaluation method for correlating the variable density image on paper or a sheetlike base material with the result of organoleptic evaluation due to the visual observation of an evaluator, and to provide a quantitative evaluation apparatus and an evaluation program. SOLUTION: In the method for quantitatively evaluating the variable density image on the paper or the sheetlike base material by a computer, the variable density image on the paper or the sheetlike base material is photographed by a photographing part, the pixel density to the photographed variable density image is inputted to the computer to form a density histogram from the pixel density, the formed density histogram is recognized as a figure to calculate the center-of-gravity coordinates of the figure of the density histogram recognized as the figure and the calculated center-of-gravity coordinates are collated with the center-of-gravity of the figure of the density histogram of the preliminarily recorded variable density image due to one set of evaluation reference sheets to quantitatively evaluate the variable density image formed on the paper or the sheetlike base material.
